Abbasid Caliphate: Political Science

Political Science

A caliphate is a form of Islamic government led by a caliph (a person considered to be a political and religious successor to the prophet Muhammad, and a leader of the entire Muslim community).

The Abbasid Caliphate is the third government to succeed Muhammad, and takes its name from
Muhammad's youngest uncle, Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. It overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate in 750 CE, and reigned until it was invaded by the Mongols in 1258.
